Although birth, aging, sickness, and death are part of nature, many aspire to immortality – and, just as importantly, to preserve memories of the dead forever. What role can the metaverse play?
Cremation is now more popular than burial, set to rise to a 70% share by 2030. Meanwhile, we are increasingly remembering our lost loved ones online.
Metaverse developers are now working on 3D collection of memorial stones in the form of digital tokens, or non-fungible tokens (NFTs), that can store photos, videos, text, audio, or other files. There will be an exhibition space in the Memorial Hall, while developer Solaghosts is working on a Metacemetery.
A South Korean mother simulated her deceased daughter using virtual reality (VR). Relatives can adapt and gradually accept the loss of a family member through such technology. An individual’s knowledge might also be carried into the virtual world and displayed like a digital resurrection.
Implications for the future:
- People value virtual remembrances with social and spiritual value over real-world funerals.
- Religious events that can be paralleled in the real and virtual worlds at the same time will become more popular, while activities that adhere to religious regulations will decline in popularity.
- People living in the virtual world will see meaning in life and embrace spiritual values.
